2-Day Toubkal Ascent Hike

2 Days | 1 Night

The 2-day Toubkal ascent is the direct route to the summit of North Africa’s highest peak.

You start from the village of Imlil at 1,740m, hike up through the Ait Mizane Valley past Amazigh villages and the riverside shrine at Sidi Chamharouch, and reach the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207m by late afternoon.

2-Day At Toubkal

A fast-paced ascent of North Africa’s highest peak. Trek through the Ait Mizane Valley to Aroumd, spend the night at the Toubkal Refuge, then push for the summit at sunrise before descending back to Imlil — all in two action-packed days.

What to Expect

This trek moves fast. Day one is a steady 5- to 6-hour climb from Imlil to the refuge, gaining roughly 1,470 m of altitude. The trail follows the valley floor through the village of Aroumd, past walnut groves and terraced farmland, then steepens above Sidi Chamharouch as the vegetation thins and the air cools. Your bags travel by mule. You carry a daypack.

The Toubkal Refuge is a CAF mountain hut with dormitory bunks, shared facilities, and basic hot meals. Tagine and soup in the evening, bread and coffee at dawn. Expect a cold night even in summer.

Day two starts around 5am. Headlamp on, breakfast eaten quickly, and out onto the scree trail in the dark. The climb to the summit takes 3 to 4 hours depending on your pace. Altitude can start to bite from about 3,800m upward.

At the top, a metal triangulation point and a 360-degree view across the Atlas range, the plain of Marrakech to the north, and, on clear mornings, the edge of the Sahara to the south.

The descent back to Imlil takes another 5 to 6 hours. Your knees will feel every meter of the 2,400 m drop. A vehicle meets you in Imlil for the return transfer to Marrakech by early evening.

Good to Know

This itinerary suits hikers who already have multi-day trekking experience and can handle long days on rough terrain. If you have not hiked at altitude before, or if a 10 to 12 hour summit day sounds like more than you want, consider the 3-day route instead. The extra day adds proper acclimatisation time and turns the summit push from a test of endurance into something you can enjoy.

Best season: April to June and September to November. Summer works, but the heat below the refuge is tough. Winter turns this into a mountaineering objective requiring crampons and an ice axe.

What My Clients Say

Google Review
Did the 3-day trek with my partner last October. Neither of us had been above 2,000 m before, so we were nervous about altitude, but the extra acclimatization day made all the difference. Our guide, Abdellatif, was brilliant, really patient on the steep sections, and genuinely funny. The refuge is basic, but the food was better than expected. Standing on the summit at sunrise is something I'll remember for a long time. Only complaint: my knees were absolutely destroyed on the way down. Bring trekking poles.

We nearly booked a 2-day trip with another company but switched to the 3-day trip after reading about altitude sickness. Really glad we did. Day one through the villages was actually our favourite part of the whole trip. Had lunch with a family in Aroumd, and the kids were fascinated by our accents. Summit morning was tough but manageable. Abdellatif organised the transfer from Marrakech and it was smooth and on time both ways.

Booked the 2-day ascent with Abdellatif. I do a lot of alpine hiking, so the altitude wasn't new to me. He was professional, knew the mountain well, and didn't waste time. Reached the summit by 8am on day two. Clear views all the way to the desert. Straightforward logistics, no surprises, exactly what I wanted.

Solo female traveller here. Was a bit apprehensive about doing this alone, but honestly never felt uncomfortable for a second. Abdellatif was respectful and knowledgeable, and the other trekkers at the refuge were friendly. The scree section above the refuge is no joke, though; it took me longer than the estimated time, and I was grateful nobody rushed me. Would recommend the 3-day option to anyone who isn't a regular hiker. The valley walk on day one is gorgeous, and your legs will thank you on summit day.
