What to Expect
Day one starts with the morning transfer from Marrakech to Imlil. Rather than heading straight uphill toward the refuge, I take you on a loop through the Imlil Valley and surrounding Berber villages. The trails wind through terraced orchards, past stone houses built into the hillside, and along paths that families use daily. You stop for lunch at a village home.
Mint tea, home-cooked food, and a pace that lets you settle into the mountains. This day matters more than it looks on paper. Walking at moderate altitude gets your lungs working before the bigger push.
Day two follows the main route up the Ait Mizane Valley. Through the village of Aroumd, past walnut groves, up to the shrine at Sidi Chamharouch, and onward through increasingly rocky terrain to the Toubkal Refuge. Because you have already slept a night at altitude, this day feels different from the 2-day version.
Your breathing is easier. Your legs have found their rhythm. Arrival at the refuge is typically mid-afternoon, leaving time to watch the light change across the Neltner basin before dinner and an early night.
Day three is the summit push. Same pre-dawn start as the 2-day route, but your body has had two nights to adapt. The headaches and nausea that catch people on rapid ascents are far less likely.
The climb is still hard work. Steep scree, thin air, and a long day. But you reach the top of North Africa with energy to spare rather than running on fumes. The descent back through the refuge and down to Imlil takes the rest of the day. A vehicle meets you for the return drive to Marrakech.
